Great Lenten Vespers is a solemn evening prayer service observed in Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic traditions during Great Lent. It is part of the Church’s rich liturgical cycle and sets a penitential tone, preparing the faithful for Pascha (Easter). This service invites the faithful into more profound prayer, self-examination, and preparation for the joy of Christ’s Resurrection.

Key Features of Great Lenten Vespers:

1. Penitential Character – The prayers, hymns, and readings emphasize repentance, humility, and spiritual renewal.

2. Special Hymnody—Includes the Lenten verses “Lord, I Have Cried” (Psalm 141) with added stichera focusing on fasting, mercy, and repentance.

3. The Prayer of St. Ephraim – A central Lenten prayer asking for humility, patience, and love while rejecting idleness and pride.

4. Prostrations and Metanias – Frequent full prostrations (falling to the ground in reverence) and bows, emphasizing humility before God.

5. Tone and Music – Uses solemn melodies with a slower, more meditative pace than regular Vespers.

6. Readings from the Psalms and Old Testament – Often focusing on themes of repentance and salvation history.

When It Is Celebrated:

•Typically on Sunday evenings during Great Lent, often as part of Lenten Sunday Vespers or Lenten Mission Vespers, especially in Orthodox communities where multiple parishes come together.

•It may also be combined with Presanctified Liturgy during the weekdays of Lent.
