Ana Stoy’s paintings and drawings celebrate the enduring beauty of nature, legacy, and memory. In this collection, the familiar landscapes of suburban Philadelphia are reimagined and enriched with archetypal motifs drawn from generations past—bridging time, place, and tradition.

All works are available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the church.

Zvezdana Stojmirovic (Ana Stoy) is a painter based in North Wales, PA. She studied at The Cooper Union, the Whitney Independent Study Program, and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where for many years she served as a professor and associate dean.

Остварила је успешне каријере у дизајну и као професор, а при крају и продекан, на факултету Мајка (MICA) у Балтимору.

Српска слава (празновање крсне славе) у част Светог Василија Острошког Чудотворца је дубоко поштована традиција, нарочито међу породицама и крајевима повезаним са православном вером у Црној Гори и Србији. Свети Василије, епископ и подвижник из 17. века, поштује се због својих чуда, смирења и исцелитељских моћи. Његове нетрулежне мошти почивају у Манастиру Острог, светом месту ходочашћа уклесаном у стену у Црној Гори, које годишње посећују хиљаде верника. Током славе, породице које славе Светог Василија као свог заштитника припремају посебну службу која укључује освећење хлеба (славски колач), жита (кољиво) и вина, уз молитве и црквене песме. Слава је истовремено и религиозна и културна потврда српског православног идентитета, са нагласком на породично јединство, гостољубивост и захвалност светитељу за његово посредништво и заштиту.

The Serbian Slava (patron saint celebration) honoring St. Basil of Ostrog the Wonderworker is a deeply revered tradition, especially among families and regions connected to the Orthodox faith in Montenegro and Serbia. St. Basil, a 17th-century bishop and ascetic, is venerated for his miracles, humility, and healing powers. His incorrupt relics rest in the Monastery of Ostrog, a sacred pilgrimage site carved into a cliffside in Montenegro, drawing thousands of believers annually. During the Slava, families who have St. Basil as their patron saint prepare a special service that includes the blessing of bread (slavski kolač), wheat (koljivo), and wine, accompanied by prayers and hymns. The celebration is both a religious and cultural affirmation of Serbian Orthodox identity, emphasizing family unity, hospitality, and gratitude to the saint for his intercession and protection.

Тропар Светом Василију Острошком, централна химна која се поје током славе и литургијских обележавања, одражава његову светост и чудотворну моћ. У њему се слави као светионик православља, као вођа монаха и моћни заступник за болесне и страдалне. Језик тропара истиче његову повезаност са Богом кроз подвижнички живот и његову улогу као чудотворца, кроз кога се божанска благодат видљиво пројављује. Преко тропара, верници изражавају и поштовање и поверење, молећи Светог Василија да се моли за њихово спасење и добробит. Његов дан славе, који се празнује 12. маја (по јулијанском календару 29. априла), време је и свечаног побожног поштовања и радосног окупљања, одржавајући вековну традицију која повезује веру, наслеђе и наду у божанску помоћ у свакодневном животу.

The Troparion to St. Basil of Ostrog, a central hymn chanted during the Slava and liturgical commemorations, reflects his sanctity and miraculous power. It praises him as a beacon of Orthodoxy, a guide to monastics, and a powerful intercessor for the sick and suffering. The troparion’s language underscores his connection with God through his ascetic life and his role as a wonderworker (čudotvorac), someone through whom divine grace is tangibly revealed. Through the troparion, the faithful express both veneration and trust, asking St. Basil to pray for their salvation and well-being. His Slava day, celebrated on May 12th (Julian calendar: April 29th), is a time of both solemn devotion and joyful gathering, keeping alive a centuries-old tradition that ties together faith, heritage, and the hope of divine help in everyday life.

6. маја славимо српску православну славу Светог Ђорђа (Свети Ђорђе), једног од најпоштованијих светаца у српској традицији. Свети Ђорђе се слави због своје храбрости, непоколебиве вере и победе над злом, симболизоване у легендарној причи о убиству аждаје.

On May 6th, we celebrate the Serbian Orthodox Slava of Saint George (Sveti Đorđe), one of the most revered saints in Serbian tradition. Saint George is honored for his courage, unwavering faith, and triumph over evil, symbolized in the legendary tale of him slaying the dragon.

Свети Ђорђе је био римски војник и побожни хришћанин који је живео крајем III и почетком IV века, за време владавине цара Диоклецијана. Познат по својој храбрости и непоколебивој вери, јавно је одбио да се одрекне хришћанства упркос царевим наређењима током суровог прогона. Због тога је Ђорђе био затворен, мучен и на крају пострадао за своја уверења. Његова храброст и жртва брзо су га учиниле симболом хришћанске врлине, и временом је постао поштован у источној и западној хришћанској традицији. Иконична легенда о Светом Ђорђу који убија аждају представља победу добра над злом и вере над страхом — трајни симбол духовне снаге и моралног интегритета.

Saint George was a Roman soldier and devout Christian who lived during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries under the rule of Emperor Diocletian. Known for his bravery and unwavering faith, he openly refused to renounce Christianity despite the emperor’s orders during a time of brutal persecution. As a result, George was imprisoned, tortured, and ultimately martyred for his beliefs. His courage and sacrifice quickly made him a symbol of Christian valor, and over time, he became venerated across both Eastern and Western Christian traditions. The iconic legend of St. George slaying the dragon represents the triumph of good over evil and faith over fear—an enduring symbol of spiritual strength and moral integrity.

The Akathist to the Theotokos is a well-known hymn of praise dedicated to the Virgin Mary, traditionally chanted in Orthodox Christian devotion. It consists of 24 stanzas, alternating between kontakia (short hymns) and ikoi (longer praises), often used during Great Lent and in personal prayer.

Saturday is the day the Church has set aside for the commemoration of faithful Orthodox Christians who have departed this life in the hope of resurrection to eternal life. Since the Divine Liturgy cannot be served on weekdays during Great Lent, the second, third, and fourth Saturdays of the Fast are appointed as Soul Saturdays, when the departed are remembered at Liturgy.

In addition to the Liturgy, kollyva (wheat or rice cooked with honey and mixed with raisins, figs, nuts, sesame, etc.) is blessed in church on these Saturdays. The kollyva reminds us of the Lord’s words, “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). The kollyva symbolizes the future resurrection of all the dead. As Saint Simeon of Thessalonica (September 15) says, man is also a seed planted in the ground after death and will be raised again by God’s power. Saint Paul also speaks of this (I Cor. 15:35-49).

It is customary to give alms in memory of the dead in addition to the prayers we offer for their souls. The angel who spoke to Cornelius testifies to the efficacy of almsgiving: “Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God” (Acts 10:4).

Memorial services for the dead may be traced back to ancient times. Chapter 8 of the Apostolic Constitutions recommends memorial services with Psalms for the dead. It also contains a beautiful prayer for the departed, asking that their voluntary and involuntary sins be pardoned, that they be given rest with the Patriarchs, Prophets, and Apostles in a place where sorrow, suffering, and sighing have fled away (Isaiah 35:10). Saint John Chrysostom mentions the service for the dead in one of his homilies on Philippians, and says that the Apostles established it. Saint Cyprian of Carthage (Letter 37) also speaks of our duty to remember the martyrs. 

The holy Fathers also testify to the benefit of offering prayers, memorial services, Liturgies, and alms for the dead (Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Cyril of Jerusalem, Saint John of Damascus, etc.). Although the righteous and those who have not repented and corrected themselves may receive benefit and consolation from the Church’s prayer, it has not been revealed to what extent the unrighteous can receive this solace. It is impossible, however, for the Church’s prayer to transfer a soul from a state of evil and condemnation to a state of holiness and blessedness. Saint Basil the Great points out that the time for repentance and forgiveness of sins is during the present life, while the future life is a time for righteous judgment and retribution (Moralia 1). Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Gregory the Theologian, and other patristic writers concur with Saint Basil’s statement.

By praying for others, we benefit them and ourselves because “God is not so unjust as to forget your work and the love which you showed for His sake in serving the saints...” (Heb. 6:10).
